Tho second challenge mateli of the. season for tho Heathcotc-Williams Shield wascommenced at Eden Park (Auckland) on Thursday between the Auckland Grammar School, holders,- and the Palmerston North High School. The weather, though dull remained fine. The wicket was in fail order, though thb outfield was rather dead. Palmerston North batted first and mad* 222 runs in the first innings, while tin Grammar School team was disposed of foi 109. ■ - " . , Stock well and Sollit ’opened the batting for the visitors, and the board showed 25 when the former was clean bowled, by Hums.’ Leet then partnered Sollift and a good stand was made, the total being 92 when Sollitt was run out. K. flodder tilled the vacancy and an additional 40 runs were obtained before Leet met a similar fab through Burns making a smart return Monrad was the next batsman and at 141 he was given out leg before to Jaggs jus! before the luncheon adjournment. On resuming, M. Hodder partnered his brother and tho score was raised to 185 when K. Hodder was caught at the wickets by Kelly. Tovey followed and the board showed 207 when M. Hodder was bowled by Badeley. The remaining four wickets added only 16 runs, the innings closing for 222.

Grammar School commenced its inning by sending in Badeley and Dunning, tin former taking strike to Harrison, a good fast bowler. Throe runs came off the over and then K. Hodder bowled from tho other end. Seven more runs had been obtained when he bowiod Dunning. Postlos filled the vacancy, and Harrison took Badeley’s wicket with the second ball of his second over. In their second innings next day the Palmerston boys scored 96 on a damp and rather treacherous wicket, the best scorers being Tovey (not out) 20 and Hoddor 24. Dunning took three wickets for 36 and Jaggs four for 18. The wicket had improved considerably when Grammar School went in, but their score of 186 was not sufficient to overcome the big lead established by Palmerston North on the first innings. The highest scores were Postlos (not out) 94, and Dunning 59, no one else reaching double figures. Bowling for Palmerston North, Dawber took six wickets for 64 and K. Hodder three for 50. THE VICTORS’ RETURN. HEATIICOTE-WILLIAMS SHIELD BROUGHT TO PALMERSTON NORTH. HIGH SCHOOL BOYS WELCOMED. Freeh from the fields of victory and wfth the spoils, in tho shape of the coveted Heat hcote-Williams Shield in the luggage van, the Palmerston North High School cricket team returned from Auckland today by the second Main Trunk express. As a result of the inter-school matches the team have three scalps dangling at their girdle. Napier High School was decisively beaten in Palmerston North before the team went on tho trip North, which resolved itself into a triumphal tour. Hamilton succumbed to the local cricketers and then bigger game was sought in Auckland. The Auckland Grammar School, holders of tho Heatlicoto-Williams Shield, which is competed for by secondary schools of both Islands, wore challenged. Tho match took place on Eden Park and was watched with interest by crowds of enthusiasts. Tho final lesult was a win for the Palmerston North boys by 23 runs and the subsequent handing over of the shield. „ Tho Mayor (Mr J. A. Nash), Mr E. 11. Crabb, and several cricket enthusiasts, as well ns other local residents interested in tho High School, wore on the railway station when the train arrived. 'lhrough the strain imposed on Mr Nash’s voice of late he was unable to address tho hoys, so Mr Crabb spoke in his stead, and welcoined tho tonm on behalf of the residents of Pnlmerslon North. Everyone was immensely proud, said Mr Crabb, at tho feat accomplished by the High School boys in carrying off the trophy. They had made a name for themselves in the realms of sport. It was now recognised that education was not the only thing necessary to build up a man. training in sport was also needed. . Ho hoped that their school would hold the trophy for ninny years to come. Mr Crabb then called for cheers for tho victorious team, which were given with an enthusiasm that showed how popular was tho success of the lO Mr M i: Hodder, tho “skipper” of the team, replied on tnrir behalf. They had gone to Auckland with tho firm intention of bnng- ; ing tho shield homo, and ho.was gladly they had done so. However, tho Palmerston bovs had • “stuck" at it and managed to dismiss the opposition with 23 runs to spare. Ho echoed the sentiments of Mr Crabb in hoping that they would hold the slucld for many years.
