PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

The foi(nightly meeting of lln> Patriotic Society was held yesterday afternoon. The .Mayor presided, and (hero wore present ; lie vs. Douli, McDonald Aspland and Grindead, and Messrs F. 11. Stevens. j '1 he .Minister for Defence wrote in reply j to the Society re a supply of uniforms for 1 the Patriotic Drum Bund, and stated that (ho issue of military uniforms to non-mili-tary bands was contrary to regulations, and could not be made. —The matter was loft in the hands of Messrs A. J. Graham | and J. Permain to interview the Minister when passing through Palmerston and reI port to (he Society. The Manawatn Trotting Club notified that it was donating a sum of £25 to the Sick and Woundi-d Fund, and £2-5 to the Y.M.C.A., a cheque for which was enclosed. —Received with thanks. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Messrs limes and Oakley for their generosity in making a donation to the Society of the amount for their services in the recent business transaction. Mr R. tV. Browning, scoutmaster All Saints’ troop, wrote offering to purchase sidedrum if tho Drum Band had a, spare instrument. —Loft in lie hands of the secretary, who staled there was a spare drum in hand at present. The Auckland branch of the Navy League intimated that- “The Originals.’’ the girls’ branch of the League, contemplated a visit to Palmerston on February 15 and 16, 1918, and asked if the Society would arrange accommodation for the company. —Received, the matter being left in the hands of the Mayor. The Church of England Military .Forces Association wrote thanking the Society for its donation towards their funds.—Received. Tho Recruiting Board wrote .that the Dominion roll of the Second Division was being prepared, and the first portion, A to (•; was printed and would be forwarded to post, police mid defence officers and Second Division Leagues. The Board asked the Society to look through tho roll, and if there were any discrepancies in it to notify the Board. —Received. The Palmerston Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote rc a request for the names, of '■claimed soldiers, for the purpose- of issuing invitations to a recent welcome homo.social. When the Association wrote declining to give the information it was not aware that the information had been asked for on the recommendation of a. member of the. Association's executive, otherwise their reply would have been worded in a different manner. The outcome of the matter was that this member bad resigned from the executive and Association at its last meeting. When the matter > was brought up at the Returned Souliers Association, this member seconded a. resolution to refuse the information. The motion would give wider powers, and increase the general interest in the Society. Rev Aspland said it would be noticed m the press that the King had ordered a day of praver on January 6 next, and the speaker said that so far as Palmerston was concerned he hoped that a united service, m which all denominations would take pan. would bo arranged, as on previous occasions. The Mayor stud that no doubt such a service could be arranged. STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS.
