The Herald describes the Cup as the mast exciting duel ever seen at Flemington. As the horses passed the shed "Westcourt began to emerge from the ruck, and getting a clear run on the outside, was just behind Almo and Broken Glass. Three furlongs from home ho moved up next to the tiring Almo. As heads turned towards home Tingle and Wallace Isinglass put in an appearance, and the field bunched up before reaching the distance. Almo heat a retreat, leaving Westcourt in command, but he was immediately tackled by Li'ngle, and clearing from their followers the pair fought out a brilliant battle. Lingle was gradually gaining on the son of Bright Steel from the halt distance, but McLachlah kept Westcourt going and passed the judge's line with very little to spare. Not until Westcourt's 'number was hoisted did tho majority know the winner. The Telegraph describes the finish as most exciting. The pair went past the post locked together, and an excited crowd stood up and called a dead heat. Alter a time of silence the judge announced Westcourt the winner.
