CAPTURED PILLBOXES USEFUL.
(Delayed Cable.) LONDON. Oct. 13. Mr Reach Thomas (Daily Mail), in his account of the fighting in the early part of October, says:— The enemy is now forced to oppose our advances with flesh and blood instead of earth and concrete. The successive battles have pierced great gaps in the blockhouse defences, and tho concrete streets are now used lor ths protection of our men instead of tho Germans, saving many lives. From the shelter of these, into the fifth battle of tho most glorious series in the British annals, thousands of men went to the foremost trenches. Colossal guns wont forward, jostling tho light limbered field guns, and defying the swamps. The railway traffic undula ted through the ridges with the speed of a porpoise at sea. Only the High Command believed that the tremendous preparations for , another battle could be completed in four days, but the army accomplished much during the pitch-black nights. Tha crowning achievement was the provision of a good meal and long rest on tho fringe of the battlefield.
