SATISFACTORILY EXPLAINED.
(l'gll PBEB3 ASSOCIATION.} WELLINGTON, Nov 1. Recently Mr W. IT. Field, in the House of Representatives, asked the Minister for Defence (Sir dames Alien) whether he had taken effective steps to prevent any recurrence ol the alleged shameful profiteering of .shipping companies by supplying inferior food to the troops on -transports, a practice which seem to have been indulged in on numbers of ships, as evidenced byletters received from soldiers on board. Mr Field quoted from one _of these letters, which condemned in strong terms the accommodation and the food. The Minister replied: "Tho honourable gentleman has already drawn my attention to the supply of butter on ,| u , S-S , . There are difficulties in taking action; but the Government is considering what stops can be taken to dead with those responsible. The honourable gentleman's question seems to indicate that' he knows ol grievances on other transports. II particulars are. given to me full enquiry will ho. made, and, if necessary, action will be taken."
