German brutality towards the. defenceless Belgians is steadily 'worse. Men dare not appear in the streets lest they should be impressed for work at the front. Prominent persons disappear daily, depart and do not return ; thousands are forced to worlc under artillery and aeroplane fire, and their mutilated bodies are sent home for burial. The Ocrm/ms describe them as "England's helpless victim-.'' whereas they are compelled to work in the firing line.
