HOW SHE WAS SUNK. VICE-ADMIRAL SIMS’S ACCOUNT. 70 MEN 3IISSING. Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. Received October 22, 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON, Oct. 21. One hundred and sixty-seven officers, seamen and soldiers wore saved from the transport Antilles'. Vice-Admiral Sims has forwarded news of her sinking-. The Antilles was convoyed by United States patrollers. The U-boat was not soon. The torpedo struck abreast of the engineroom, and the ship sank in five minutes. She was a nineteen-knottor owned by the Southern Pacific, and not a Ward liner. It is believed the suddenness of the explosion trapped the men in the engineroom, who perished. The attack was made well out at sea. There wore no high officers aboard and the men showed perfect discipline. The New York newspapers comment that it was fortunate the Antilles was bound to America, otherwise the deathroll would have been heavier. The sinking of the transport came as a shock. It was the first real casualties, forcing the realisation that the nation is at war. Reports show that 53 army enlisteds wore aboard, of whom 17 were saved. The third engineer and two officers perished, and it is believed that in all 70, who arc missing, perished. . , . , The newspapers point out that the sinking will consolidate the support given to the President, and defeat the obstructionists, and also give a fillip to the Liberty Loan.
