KAIRANGA COUNTY COUNCIL.

! The following report was presented at yesterday's meeting of the above. Council:The engineer (Mr Wright) reported as follows:-' ir . . Mangaone Riding.-Maintenance : 1 iuee teams '""have been employed during the month, about 350 yards of metal being carted out for use in patching on different roads throughout the riding. Cameron's .line: The lower end of this road ha.s been trimmed into shape with the grader, and the contract for carting- of metal for patching will be proceeded with during the coming month. Taonui-Feildjng road: The surface of tliis road has become very rough and uneven, and it is proposed during the coining month to scarify the. metal, grade, it into shape, and roll.it down again. Culverts: A new cement pipe culvert has been put in on Newbury line, a little, below the junction with Milson's line. Horses: Two 'new draught horses have been purchased to replace a horse recently killed,-and one it is proposed to sell. Rangiti'kei Line.—Maintenance: about one mile of this road was scarilied, graded into shape, and then rolled down. Other work carried out has mostly consisted ol patching. Culverts: A new culvert, has been put in near Mangaone riding bridge to replace an old timber-culvert? Thou rotten. Taonui Riding;—Foxjon Line: Tlie only work carried out, on this road during the month has been, patching of metal, and trimming of flanks of road with grader, the expenditure amounting to about £37. During the half-year just concluded, the expenditure on this road has been as follows: Ordinary maintenance and patching, Rangiotu Karere. £361. Karere to Palmerston North £384; a total of £745. £7O ha.s been expended on remetalling and about £27 on culverts and bridges. Kairanga-Bunny-thorpe road: The Contract for carting out metal for use on this road has been proceeded with, a total of 361J c. yards bemg delivered, the length remetalled' being about 35' chains. Longburn-Rongotea road : An average of two teams have been employed carting out metal for patching on this road, the expenditure being about £52 for the month. Gillespie's line: Further work in the, way of widening formation with spoil removed from other roads lias been carried out. Besides the above work, patching has been carried out on No. 1 line, Karere, and Aorangi roads, and these and other roads ha.ve been trimmed into shape- with the grader. Culverts: 'l'ho culvert at the. junction 'of Rangifikei and No, 4 line has ' been lengthened, thus doing away with an open drain, which was rather dangerous. A cement pipe culvert ha.s also been put in on .Kairanga-Bunnythorpe road, near tire junction with Raiigitikei line, and a timber culvert on No, <1 line, then rotten, replaced with cement pipes. Fitzherbert Riding.-Contract No. 12, Scott's Ttbad: This contract has been pro reeded with, and considering that only three men are employed, very good progress has been made, about 8 chains of dray formation in heavy sideling being completed. Maintenance: This has consisted mainly in patching and trimming flanks of metal'with graders. Bridges: Ttiojrepairs required to the bridge opposite Mr Kccble's. on Fifeherb'ert West road have been proceeded with. Culverts: Two new cement pipe culverts have been put in on the Pahiatua road; in the case of the larger one a. good deal of tilling in was required. Another of the, old culverts under H, large filling was recently washed out. and a. temporary bridge has been erected to allow of the road being used for traffic until new pipes required come to hand. Manawatu Gorge: Although small slips have been fairly numerous this road lias not been closed to traffic during the month. It will be necessary during the summer to widen formation at several points where the outer edge of the road ha.s slipped away.
