ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP.

WEBB CHALLENGED. Seeing that Fogwell beat Whelch for the professional rowing championship of New Zealand, and that since that event the title has not been rowed for, it would be assumed that Fogwell was the champion. On that assumption Hannon challenged Fogwell over" two months ago, when thj» latter forfeited. Webb, of Wanganui, hag put in a claim for the championship, «nd though his grounds to be regarded as the holder of the title do not hold water, with the rowing authorities in Sydney, Hannon i 9 conceding him the honour. The latter oarsman—a Wellington man—has been endeavouring to bring about a match with Webb since his arrival here some two months ago. Now he had succeeded in getting a backing for £IOO, and on Monday last formally challenged Webb to row for the championship of New Zealand and £IOO aside. With the challenge (which was forwarded to the Wanganui Herald) was a cheque for £lO, the first deposit on the stake. It now remains for Webb to take up the challenge and arrange a date for the match without delay—if he intends to defend the title he claims. Webb is an exoellent sport, mho has never side-stepped a challenge when the money is up, and the rowing community may look forward with confidence to an interesting race. Webb's Wanganui friends state that he can "come back" because he never went away.
