SHANNON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Tuesday night's meeting of the Debating Society-was devoted to the Annual Journal. The Rev. J. A. McKenzio officiated as editor, owing- to Mr J. J. Trainer's absence. Amongst excellent papers that were contributed were "A Trip to Broken Hill," by Misa Dalil; "Critique of W. VV. Jacobs' Writings," "The Amount of Money a Man Should Allow his Wife," "A Poem on the Progress of Shannon," "Notes From Our Local Correspondent," "Ten Commandments for Men and Women," and "The Pest of the Future," by Miss Linsell. A vote was taken on the best and second best contributions, which resulted in Miss Linsell being first and Miss Dalil second. The Rev. McKenzie is donating two trophies to the winners. Next week Mr C. F. Ex all will move.: "That the Interests of the Employer- and Employee are Identical." Mr Sinclair will oppose the motion. The Shannon Recreation Reserve was well patronised on Wednesday by our sports-loving townspeople. At 2 o'clock a hockey match took place between the Shannon and Levin ladies' hockey clubs, with the result that the home team was defeated by 3 goals to 1. This was followed by a rep. hockey match between North and South, the teams being composed of members of the various northern and southern hockey clubs in the Horowhenua Association. Both teams were evenly matched, although they lacked combination. The result at thi/close of the game was: South 1 goal. North.nil. Mi3s Greenwood, and Mr F. Just, physical culture instructors of the Education Department, visited Shannon on Wednesday to inspect tJie chil4rem. of -the Shannon i public school. They expressed their > ap- ; proval of the progrpfes tHftt had boen Jhac|e : during form of drill. Mr Jwfj':)*i marked that' Shannon had one Hf'Hitjfß \ worst school- playgrounds he had s^n,&» a township of tnis size. It is to be hoped |that the school, committee will take this Jto heart and make an endeavour to raise : sufficient money to asphalt the grounds, (now that the Education Department are | offering a £1 for £1 subsidy for money ! raised for this purpose- | The Hockey Club held a well-attended ! dance in the Druids' Hall on Wednesday ! night. Mr J. T. Bovis officiated as M.C. in his usual genial and able manner. The musio was supplied by Mrs Butler (piano), and Messrs "Hook and Graham (violins). The dance was interspersed with I vocal and elocutionary items.
