RADIUM INSTITUTE APPEAL.

A WORTHY MOVEMENT. In a recent issue the Taranaki News ys : ,7 movement is afoot in Palmerston North to establish a Radium Institute for the use of the whole of the North island. Ihe amount required is £12,000. ot which h2OOO has already been subscribed, one generous settler contributing £IOOO , uso is a worthy and deserving one and it is to be hoped the promoters will succeed m raising the required amount. • • . • £12.000 for the proposed Institute is not very larsre for a wealthy country like New Zealand to subscribe. If it were wanted for the purpose of amusement instead of for curing disease it, would be forthcoming at the first time of asking. Anything tending to alleviate suffering and to preserve life has a first claim on the community, and should bo strongly supi>orted. The promoters of the mc>vement have a right to expect a lead-and a substantial lead—from the Gbvernment which, m tact should never have waited a f ° f , ° l ' aid -, but 6hould have undertaken of its own volition (he establishment ot radium institutions in both "islands."
