ARRESTING RAND AGITATORS.

Part of the settled policy of the Government is to cheek excitement and disturbance. The authorities hitherto have refrained from prosecution. but the policy of toleration is now regarded as a failure. (London Times.—Sydney Sun Special.) JOHANNESBURG. Sept. 5. INCREASED WAGES.

MELBOURNE. Sept. 5. At the half-yearly meeting of the Australian Steamship*, Ltd., the chairman said lie regretted the figures did not warrant a dividend. The six months' working had resulted in a loss. Other ship-owning companies like themselves were surnrieed at the recent large increase in expenditure in the coastal trade. This was due to tlte increase in wages and the decrease in working hours. Some freight rates had been increased in July, and probably further increases would be forced upon the company.

ALL ROUND INCREASE DEMANDED

LONDON, Sept. 4. The Congress at Manchester, in view of the continued rise in the co6t of living, resolved to favour trades unions' early and simultaneous action to obtain an increase of five shillings weekly in all grades of time and piece workers in public and private employ.

THE DUBLIN DISPUTE. Received September 6. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 5. Dublin employers allogo that the trade unions have often failed to carry out written settlements with employers, and arc endeavouring to abolish them.
