TRADES UNIONS AND POLITICS.

WORKERS NOT BENEFITED. (London Times.—Sydney Sun Special.) (Bl SLKTMC TttMRAPH—COPI BIOHT.) (Piß PIESS ASSOCIATION'.) LONDON, Sept. 3. The Times, in a special article insist--1 ing on the failure of trades unionism, says that between 1902-6 eleven million working days were lost in strikes in Britain, anu in 1912 forty million, while the working conditions" had become harsher and harder, and the workers were not only being speeded up by the employers, but were also socially screwed down by the new governing classes. With trades unionism pure and simple the workers went ahead. With political trades unionism they were going backward.

THE OTHER SIDE.

Received September 4, 9.45 a.m. LONDON. Sept. 3. At the Trades Union Congress Mr Harvey, the Miners' Union delegate, moved, and the Congress adopted, a resolution emphasising the vital importance of the ballot which is proceeding under the Trades Union Act of 1913 and strongly recommending all trades unionists to vote in favour of unions undertaking political action. Mr Harvey described the miners as the pioneers of political activity, and said the money expended in that direction was the* finest investment they had made. (Cheere.)
