BURGLARS IN PALMERSTON.

TWO PREMISES ENTERED

Two cases of breaking and entering aro reported to have occurred in the early hours of tho morning. In cne instance an unwelcome visitor was discovered in tho parcels office at the railway _ station, and in the other Messrs C. W. W ycherley and Son's saddlery shop in the Square was ener.tercd. Fortunately in both eases the burglar appears to have b?en disturbed before completing his depredations. It. ia the custom to open tho railway parcels office. every morning at about 4 o'clock —'half an hour before the early train leaves for the Wairarapa at 4.35 a.m. The porter on early morning duty this week came down a« usual this morning and opened up the office. No sooner had he dono so than he heard tlie noise of a man escaping through a window at the back of the building and opening on to Main street. An investigation disclosed the fact that though tho tills had been tampered with, tho intruder could not open them and consequently nothing had been taken. It is surmised that, having made his entry hurriedly, ho tried the tills and was disturbed before he could force them open.

Mr Wvcherlev's premises, the Square, were also broken into at an early hour this morning. An entrance to the building was effected by means of the back window. As far as can be ascertained, nothing was stolen, Mr Wycherley having removed all cash from his till the previous evening.
