CORRESPONDENCE.
fTO THE EDITOB.) Sir, —In looking over your much-read paper of Saturday last I noticed the paragraph respecting the death of an old Foxton settler, Mr C. V. Furrie, my old friend and ehipmate. We landed in Wellington 35 years to-day. That day was the Prince of Wales Birthday, but the ship Hawera, if there was such a ship, we did not come in. The one we came in was the>Ho\vrah. Well do I remember the day that we landed on the Wellington wharf. I was in the first tender, for our ship" lay at anchor, and, being anxious to know the feelings of the people, I left my mates and got among the croivd that came to eee ua land. Oh, how they did pity us. One man by my side said: "Poor d s, they will soon wish they were back again." I ventured to say to him, "Do you think so?" He said, "Yes. How long have you been here?" I said "Not very long, and I think there is room for them all." "What will they do when thai; Government' job is finished?" referring to the large Government officee that were then under construction. He said, "They will starve." Now, Mr Editor, I never heard of any of our number starving, and, further, before the building was finished there were very few, if one, on the job of the party that came out from Glasgow. I may say here that they were engaged for- the work at Home at so much a day, and they were docked one shilling a' day right off, which disheartened them very much.! Our friend, who has passed from our midst, was the one chosen as school teacher . from out of over a- hundred single men on board our ship.—l am, etc., WM. ANDERSON. Palmerston N., Nov. 9.
