The shipping companies complain of the harrassing effect of the Alien Restriction Act in regard to shipwrecked Asiatics. The Union Company is the latest victim. The British law lays it down that distressed seamen must be landed from a wreck and'makes no distinction of" colour. The Australian law prevents the landing of aliens. The Tofua brought up the shipwrecked crew of the Kilburn from Fiji. They were mostly Asiatics, and it Was found they could not land themi The men were taken back to the islands, but one. escaped, for which the oompariy is liable to pay £100.
