SHANNON.

(Feom, Oor Owx Correspondent.) The annual meeting of parishioners of the Ven. Bedc's (Anglican) Church, Shannon, was held in the church on Saturday ' evening. The Vicar (Rev. S. G. G'omp- • ton) presided. The balance-sheet, submitted by Mr J. W. Batchelar, retiring • churchwarden, showed that ihe receipts for the year had been £45 13s 6d and expenditure £45 13s lOd. leaving a debit balance of £1 Os 4d. There was a sum -of £47 17s. balance from the bazaar account, to the credit of the funds in the P.O. Savings Bank. The Vicar appointed Mr W. 11. Gunning as his churchwarden. Mr IT. Knowlcs was elected parishioners' churchwarden, Mr Martin was clected auditor, and the following were chosen vestrymen:—Messrs C. B. Robinson, PI. G. Harris, F. Linsell. jun.. Johnson. J. W. Batchelar, J. R. Esson, and C. F. Exall (hon. secretary). The name of Miss Woodman was added to - the list of lady visitors on the Vicar's proposition. The Vicar explained the steps he had taken to secure a resident . minister for the Church of England in Shannon. The Bishop favoured the appointment of a vicar for Shannon rather than a curate working under the Vicar of Levin. A meeting of the vestry fol- . lowed, and was concluded by the Benediction, pronounced- by the Rev. S. G. Compton. A rink of bowlers consisting of Messrs G. Paton, W. Clayton, E. Yuille, and J." Roach (skip) will Visit Levin on Wednesday to make a bid for the Kinni- - burgh Feathers. Saturday promised to be a big day ».in Shannon as regards sports, but unforV&iately it fizzled out like the proverbial wet squib. The Shannon and Mernnui Football Clubs assembled in full force on the football ground to do battle, but the match proved somewhat like a bull light without a bull, inasmuch as no ■ football was forthcoming. Someone had blundered. After several circular, arguments. in which players and spectators alike- hurled maledictions on the heads of the Management Committee, the crowd dispersed. The crickcrcrs were also disappointed. The Foxton Club telegraphed to say that they could only muster a very weak team, and were afraid to i venture, especially as Powelka was stui | jit large. ■ Mr ITislop will perform the. duties of "handicapping for the Shannon-1 okoma ru ro'itcl racc on Wednesday owing to Air A.
