POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Pohiingina County Council was held on Saturday. There' were present—Councillors Brown (chairman), Howie, Smith, Burnt?. Wngstaff. Eglinton, and Bailey. CORRESPONDENCE. From F. Cousin*, asking permission !o erect a fence on road line.—Granted. From G. Woodhead, ranger, stating that a horse had been rescued while in possession of the ranger for the purpose of impounding.—The Engineer io take action, if necessary. From D. Sinclair, stating ihat all material'had been ordered for the Parson"* Ford bridge, and it was expectedto commence work next week. From the Public Works Department, with authority to spend £200 for metalline on Finnes' road. From J. Linkkiier. asking pennkssujn I to shift fence on No. 2 line, Awahou, with the idea of making the road safer. —Granted. From N.Z. Counties' Association, asking the Council to appoint delegate to • the annual conference. From the State Advances Board, notifying approval of loans of £870 and £1000. T . From W. W. James, Fcilding, applying for hawker's license. —Granted. From R, Port, asking that drinking trough be erected at Awahou Church hill.—To be done at an early date. From Apiti Technical School Committee, acknowledging receipt of grant of £25 ' ' REPORTS. The Engineer reported as follows: — Awahou: Work had been commenced • with the metalling of Nos. 1. 2. and 3 lines, and a fence had been erected at the eastern approach of the Pohangina bridge. Coal Creek. Tenders had been accepted for delivery of 500 yards of metal on the Oroua 'Valley road. Mangaone: It was suggested that it was not - advisable to erect a trough at the Horseshoe bend, the junction of Ferry and Main roads being better. Tenders have been called for metalling 1000 yards of Finnis , road.' Mongapikopiko: Settlers on. Reid's Line intend to ask the Council to raise a Tban for forming and metalling the road, about two miles. Pohangina: The Council's terms are repairing Piri Piri hill. Dmutoi: The groyne. _at the end of the Makickie road is being attended to and a start will be made with the Piri Piri hill work next week. The Treasurer reported that the balances at the bank accounts on March 31. 1910, were as under: —County fund account, dr., £1274 19s 6d; loans account, cr., £164 4s Sd. Riding accounts: — Awahou Riding: The accounts of this riding for the past year show that, on April 1, 1909, there was a credit balance of. £128 10s 3d, and at the end of the period this balance has increased to £182 15s 7d. an increase of £54 5s sd. Coal Creek Riding: This riding started the year under review with a cr. balance of £39 0s 6d; at the present time the accounts stand in credit to the extent of £302 3s 4d. an increase of £273 2s 10d. Mangaono Riding: This riding commenced with a dr. balance of £144 10s 2d, and is at present showing a dr. bal- „ anee of £219 Is 10d, a further deficit of ; £74 11s 8d being incurred. This increased deficit is accounted for by the fact that urgent works not provided for on the estimates had to be taken in hand. Mangapikopiko Riding: The credit balance in this riding has increased by an j amount, of £155 15s 0d from £65 0s 7d on April 1, 1909, to £220 15s 7d at the 31st March. 1910. Pohangina Riding.— j The credit balance at the beginning of j the year in this riding was £74 Is 9d. and at March 31 last the accounts showed a credit of £4 5s 4d. Tamaki Riding : The overdraft in this riding has been reduced from £253 Hβ 5d to £46 j 14s. a reduction of £206 17s sd. Umutoi Riding: The overdraft in this riding has been reduced from £715 I7s to £363 9s lid, a reduction of £452 7s Id. It is gratifying to report that the whole of the rates levied were collected before the expiration of the financial year. With regard to the overdraft shown at the county fund account of £1274 19s 6d the '. following items have yet to be refunded to this account: —London's Ford Bridge: Contribution duo by Kiwetea County £288 15s 3d. loan duo from Government £870. subsidy (balance) due from Government £724 10s 6d. Pohangina Bridge : Extra subsidy due from Government I/' £250. Parson's Ford Bridge: Paid for r material to be refunded from loan £35 ' 10s 6d. making a. total of £2168 16s 3d.* • The financial position of the Council must therefore be regarded as satisfactory. . * GENERAL. ■ Accounts totalling £242 19s were ii''-~ passed for payment. The following transfers were granted : : —Messrs Osborne to Harland. Selby to Sandilands, Roseinbeck to Green. Smith to Brown. Lane to Christensen. The tender of Gardner and Grammjiv : was accepted for metalling on Finnis' : road. The Council acceded to a request maoe : : by Cr. WagstafY. on behalf of the Po- •■ hangina Domain Board, for the services * of the Engineer to superintend levelling ■v work. etc.. on the Pohangina Recreation '"'Ground. The- Council also granted the free use of its implements for the work.
