SUDDEN MANIA.
YOUNG MAN BEHAVES VIOLENTLY. (Per Press Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, April 7. A young man about 24 who had come over from Kumara with a broj ther oil a holiday trip for the benefit of his health developed symptoms iof mania early this morning. He I climbed over the iron gate of the hotel where he was staying and ran up Manchester Street. His mania took a destructive turn, and he smashed the window of a fruit shop and then shattered a big plate of glass in i the window of a boot shop. He next j climbed over a wire shutter into the J vestibule of another shop and threw I various automatic machines into the j street. The constable oil the beat, ; with the aid of a couple of civilians, : secured him and put him in a cab. i He gave the constable a bad time on ! the way to the police station, where ihe was placed in the padded cell. As j soon as the door was shut lie comj menced on the padding of the walls, j and before he could be got under con- ! trol he had torn down yards of thick I leather and heaped the padding on j the floor. Ultimately he had to be > placed in a straight-jacket, and then i lapsed into a comatose condition, , which suggested a serious brain in- ! jury of some kind. Later he was rc--1 moved to the Sunnyside Mental Hospital.
