TOKOMABU SPORTS.
Most glorious weather prevailed for the first annual sports, and the attendance far exceeded the most sanguine expectations, being between 300 and 400, all parts, of the surrounding district beingwell represented. Each event brought forth good fields, and the close finishes •were evidence of the splendid handicapping done by Mr J. R. Whyte. The Blindfold Wheelbarrow and' Sack races caused much amusement, and the Flaxspreading competition also drew the attention of the crowd. The married men and ladies' races also caused a. good deal of excitement, the finishes, being very close. The following are the winners of the events : — Maiden race. —C. Hueston 1, P. Walsh 2, B. Young ladies' race. —Miss M. Griffiths 1. Big field. Chain-stepping.—H. Barnett 66ft 1. Thirty-nine entrants. Sheep-guessing.—G. Ward and R. Jarvic guessed correct weight (741bs). During tho afternoon eleven children's races were also got off very successfully by Messrs Webb and Parr, sen.
The social and dance in the evening was equally well attended as the sports. Between 50 and 60 couples took part in tho dancing, which was the chief feature of the evening. ' The committee had the floor in a high-class condition, which made dancing a pleasure- At intervals the following programme was rendered: Miss \V. Cooke (Pahnerstori), song, "Out on the Rocks" comic duet, Messis Aisher and Gascoigne IPalmerston), "Pass the soap"; recitation. J. Webb, "The Lifeboat"; Highland Fling, Miss Minnie song, F. Aisher, "Don't take me home '; song. Miss Kelby, "Many Happy Returns of the' Day"; song, R. Guv, "Kathleen Mavourneen." Tho music was supplied by Mr H. Apatari in his usual lino style. Refreshments were also supplied by the committee.
A wire was received from Mr W. Field. M.H.R., stating his inability to attend and hoping tho sports and dance would be the first of many successful gatherings. The flaxmills closcd and tho school observed a half-holiday in honour of tho sports.
