ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
(Per Press Association.) ELTHAM, April 6. Mrs McGhie. an elderly woman, cook at the Central boarding-house, suddenly took iil this afternoon and expired. The cause is not yet known. Little is known about the deceased locally.
A remarkable escape from death by drowning is reported from the Bluff, the viqtim being a hand named Macarthy 011 the launch Lairfield Lea. The correspondent of the Dunedin Star states that the launch was lying up at the wharf, and by some means Macarthy caught the pocket of his coat 011 tho fluke'of the anchor, with the result that the jerk sent him overboard. Macarthy was drawn down with the anchor into 20ft of water, and when he endeavoured to free himself of the coat he bccame tangled up and helpless. A mate named Cantric, not an eye-witness of the accident, happened to notice the line running out rapidly, and he moved to the side to ascertain the cause. The truth must have dawned upon him, because he promptly pulled up the anchor, and with it the unfortunate Macarthy, who, however, appeared little the worse for his submersion of a minute. He said he could not have held his breath a moment longer, and would have been <£ a goner" but for Cantric's prompt action.
