PIGS AND POULTRY IN THE BOROUGH.
BYE-LAWS TO' BE ENFORCED
The Borough Council last night received the following report from the Engineer:— "In accordance with instructions, the Sanitary Inspector visited three properties where pigs are kept in numbers. At No. 1 property about 30 pigs are kept, the styes were kept clean, but the drainage runs into a ditch at the back boundary. Also on this place there are several hundred head of poultry. At No. 2, about 18 pigs are kept in styes and running on the land. The buildings drain on to the surface ground, there being no other means of drainage. The styes are not clean, and there are a number of poultry running on the land. At No. 3, there are 29 pigs kept in styes and on the land. The buildings were clean but drainage runs into open ditches. From the foregoing it will be seen that none of the places are in ideal condition, and under the circumstances it would seem that the by-laws should be put into force. Premises in Broad Street were visited, and it was found that a poultry house is built on the boundary of an adjoining property, and the building has not been lime-washed on the inside. The whole is not in accord with the by-laws, and consequently an order will bo issued to the owner to comply with the said by-laws." The Public Works Committee recommended the Council to enforce the bye-law prohibiting the keeping of pigs and fowls within the Borough, though in the case of the latter it would be allowed under stringent conditions. The Council adopted the recommendation.
