GISBORNE, March 16,

At tho Supreme Court Joseph Norcroft was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for failing to keep _ proper books, Mr Justice Cooper making the sentence a lenient one in consideration of the state of health of accused and his wife. Nathaniel Burgess was found guilty of not keeping proper books and admitted to probation.

Patrick John Hofen was sentenced to six months' imprisonment on a charge of fraud in respect to certain chattels under a bill of sale. William John Knight pleaded guilty to two charges of sheep-stealing, and was remanded for sentence.

Charles Hoggard was acquitted on a charge of assaulting John Mullins, a labourer, on the railway line and robbing him of £78. HASTINGS, March 16.

The Leatherrubber Company has accepted a tender of £969 for the erection of a factory to be completed by tho end of Mav.

The provisions of the Industrial Schools Amendment Act were brought into force in Wellington for the first time to-day. The Act empowers the police to bring any uncontrollable child before a Magistrate to be cpmmitted to an industrial school. The present case was that of a girl 14s years old, who had run away from home thrice. Her mother stated she was beyond her control, and the girl was committed to St. Joseph's Orphanage.
