BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor and Crs. Haydon, Armstrong, Stubbs, McKenzie, Hewitt, Palmer, Clausen, and Mowlem. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Health Department stating they were unable to supply report on the saleyards at present.—Received. From G. Hunt, offering tar spraying machine.—Referred to Works Committee. From P. T. Fair, complaining that drain on the Rangitikei Line had rot been cleaned.—No action taken. From the Justice Department staling the question of gaol accommodation was under consideration. —Received. From the Public Trustee, stating he would bear in mind the Council's request re sewer connection. From the Golf Club thanking the Council for carrying out river protection work. From the Manawatu County Council asking for assistance to make road to Foxton beach. —No action taken. From the Municipal Association stating that the annual conference would be held in July, and asking that any remits the Council had shoidd be forwarded. —The Mayor and ('". Haydon appointed delegates. From C. F. Francis, asking for compensation for shock to system, a bad cold, and a spoilt suit of clothes, due to stepping into a flooded open drain trap opposite the Post Office. From H. J. Canton asking that a tree be cut down and, Kaivan drain attended to.—Referred to the inspector of Nuisances in the first instance, and to the Works Committee regarding the drain. REPORTS.
The Engineer reported as follows: As authorised, I propose calling tendens for the kerbing and formation of footways around the outer enclosures in the Sqtiarc; and also for the grading of the sides of Church Street East from Princess Street to East Street, these tenders being returnable at next meeting. During the past week the old 12-inch water main near the new bridge- and tin whare has j been removed from the lied of the stream, and the new 15-inch main hfs been laid over the bridge in oLue thereof. Additional overflow area at the reservoir on Pratt's' Hill is now being provided, and when this is done the last of the necessary connections with the new 15-inch main will be completed. On Tuesday, the 7th inst., the level of the water at the upstream face of the dam was three inches below the overflow lip. As authorised, the -work of river bank protection near Fitzroy Street by means of anchored trees has been commenced, and is proceeding satisfactorily.
