THE FOXTON BEACH ROAD.

BOROUGH COUNCIL ASKED TO

CONTRIBUTE

NO ACTION TAKEN

The Manawatu County Council has written to the Borough Council asking for a contribution to the cost of the proposed road to the Foxton beach. When the matter came up for discussion last night the Mayor said that the question had cropped up at the last meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board. He added that at present the money received at Foxton from visitors to the beach, two-thirds of whom were Palmerstonians, was about £2000 per annum, and he had told the Board he could not hold out any hope of any help from this Council in the matter. The estimate of the cost of the road was £1500, equal to £75 per year. The Mayor pointed out the benefit accruing to Foxton from the Palmerston traffic to the beach, and reiterated his opinion that the proposed work should be carried out by those concerned with it. Councillors were of opinion that this Council .would not be .justified in contributing to the cost of the road, and further that the money paid by Palmerston visitors to the beach fully justified the work being carried out by. the local bodies concerned. That portion of the district got the whole benefit of a growing revenue, and that portion of the district should do the work.

No action was taken in the matter.
