HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. BUTTER VERY FIRM. ,Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 14. A cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, March 12, saye the mutton market is firm with a good demand for prime quality. Holders are not anxious to sell. The average price of Canterbury mutton is 4fd. Trie lamb market is firm, with a good demand for a! I lamb, as the Easter supplies will l'e moderate. Canterbury lamb averaged s|d, other New Zealand s*d. The beef market is quiet, holders being firm and the demand fair. New Zealand hindquarters, ; forequarters, 3id.
The butter market is very firm, and tho dernand has been exceptional. It oxceeds the supply. The stock of New Zealand butter on hand is almost exhausted, and is firmly held in second hands. The average price of choicest New Zealand is 130s per cwt, Australian and Argentine 1265, Danish 1365, Siberian 1255. Tho cheese market is firm. Prices have advanced and buyers are cautious, New Zealand white cheese averaging 61s, coloured 59s 6d.
The hemp market is lifeless, and no change in prices. The stock of New Zealand hemp on hand is 198 tons. The week's output of hemp from Manila was 19,000 bales. Last week's quotations were—Spot New Zealand good fair £25, fair £24, Manila faur current £25, fair forward good fair £24 15s, fair £23 15s. Manila £24.
The cocksfoot seed market is quiet and firm. Stocks on hand are moderate. New Zealand bright clean 171b soed 725. The wheat market is quiet, and prices arc slightly weaker. The oats market is quiet, and small business is doing. The tendency is in favour of buyers. New Zealand Sparrowbills, ex-granary, 19s per quarter of 3841b, New Zealand Danish 17s 3d per qua-rter of 3201b. The peas market is steady without animation. New Zealand Partridge 55s per 5041b. THe bean market is firm owing to reduced supplies. New Zealand beans, old crop, 40s 6d per 5041b. The hop market remains firm, and there is a general active demand. Prospects arc favourable.
