W.C.T.U.
At the monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U., held yesterday afternoon in the Baptist Church, Mrs H. Mowlem, president, was in the chair. There was §, good attendance of members.
The following resolution, to be sent to the Wanganui Education Board, was unanimously adopted:—"That the overcrowding of the infant room of College Street school and the third and four standards of Terrace End School is at the present time a serious menace to the health of the pupils, and that as children are forced by the compulsory clauses of the Education Act to spend a large part of their childhood in school rooms it is imperative that sufficient and sanitary accommodation be fully provided for." The secretary (Mrs McDonald), who attended the New Zealand W.C.T.U. Convention at Inver car gill last month, gave a report of the work done at the Convention. She said that the reports from all the departments Avhich were received at the Convention showed that the Union was working effectively throughout New Zealand. Mrs McDonald made special mention of the work amongst the Maoris, which was under the control of Miss Henderson, herself a granddaughter of one of the early missionaries. Miss Henderso;i had reI>orted that there was a great need of an organiser in this branch of the Union's work as the strain of voluntary service had been too great. Money was much needed as the Maori work necessitated much traveling. There were at present thirteen Maori Unions with a membership of 330. Mrs McDonald stated that a Maori organiser was to be appointed, and funds raised to forward the work among the natives.
