SPORTING.

DANNEVIRKE RACES.

CONCLUDING DAY.

Tho attendance at the ©anncvirke races yesterday was quite equal to the first day, and the attractive nature of the racing was continued. With the bare exception of the Hack Hurdles, and it is difficult to account for the extreme paucity of the jumpers, all tho events wero contested by sa/tisfactory fields, with the result that betting was just a little better than on the previous day, the machine returns yesterday :being £6093, as compared with £6048 on tho first day, a grand total of £12,141, a decrease of £1367 on last year's figures, £13,505. The meeting was excellently managed throughout, and was quite one of the most enjoyable yet held by the Club. Appended is a general reference to tho racing : — The withdrawal of Windage left a field of three to contest the Hack Hurdles, the opening event on the card. Nightmare had her two opponents hopelessly beaten from the start, and won pulling up by half a dozen lengths. Farronito was a bad last. All tho acceptors went to tho post in the March Handicap, arid Hermia, who on this occasion had the assistance of A. Olliver, was sent out favourite with the top-weight Sunbonnet next in demand. The rest were evenly backed. Expansion and Tarina were quickest to begin from an even start, and led Hermia and Sunbonnet along the back stretch, with Dervish, who had been cut out at tho start, a bad last. The two favourites went to the front when heads, wero turned for home, and in a good race to the post Hermia prevailed by half a length, with Liza a couple of lengths away third. . The withdrawal of Hinekorangi left a field of nino in tho Telephone Handicap. Glonspring was selected by the public to win, and carried nearly twice as much money as the second in demand. Toanga. The latter was shot out of the tapes and won easily by a length from Amaru, with Ascalon third. Glenspring and Conquestina were left at the post when the tapes were released. Glenspring set out on an absolutely helpless chase of his held but Conquestina returned to the paddock The incident led to a slight demonstration against the starter when he arrived back at tho bird-cage. Strathmoira, Royal Maid, and Lord Irwell were withdrawals from the lapuata Handicap, a field of six going to the post. Passive carried most of the monev Polynices and Liquid Air comSg next in demand. Passive was the quickest to get going, but was steadied, and at tho turn out of the straight ObBcuritv dashed to the front. Shornwas half a length away third Rangikapua was fourth and then Polymces an Wit T hThe"exception of Lethean all the accentors went to the post in the Autumn Handicap in which Sandstream was aS selected to win, with Clemora, who finished behind him tho previous day, S in favour. To Puia wae third m favour, but it was apparent her chances were not greatly favoured. The field was got away well together Miss Advance showing out passing the stand a clear length in front of Clemora, with Voetgang next on the rails. The order was not materially altered during the run along the back, except that >ruganini and Sandstream moved up with the leaders. Rounding the bottom turn the favourite put in his claim, and stalling off a run by Truganini won comfortably by a length and a half, with Te Puia close up third. Clemora was fourth, and then followed Miss Advance, Sir Frisco and Lawn Rose. All the acceptors, eight, faced the barrier in the Juvenile Handicap, which proved a snap for tho top-weight, Sea Eagle, who led all tho way, and won very easily by a couple of lengths from Waikehua, with Deploy a head away third. Virtue was fourth, a neck away. Varna broke a blood vessel and returned to the paddock bleeding profusely. Five horses went to tho post in tho next event, the Mangatera Handicap. Strathmoira was preferred by the public to Golden Water, and these two practically monopolised tho betting. Aimwell was' the first to move, but gave place to Strathmoira, and the latter was not again headed, winning easily by a couple of lengths from Golden Water, with Aimwell a length away third. Lord Irwell was fourth and Repeat a bad last. The latter appears to have lost all form. Golden Water was tho absentee in the final event of the meeting, the Kaitoke Welter, in which punter 6 backed Lethean as though the race was over, the Lethe gelding carrying about three times as much money as Marton, the second favourite. Aboriginal and Waicola were up in front all the way to the home turn, where they gave place to Lethean, who had been lying third, a length away. Half-way down the straight Marton came with a rattle, and ranging up alongside , tho favourite beat him home by a neck, Swimming Belt an indifferent third.
