VISITING GISBORNE. (Per Press Association.! GISBORNE, March 10. Dr Averell, Bishop of Waiapu, who is paying his first official visit to Poverty Bay, was tendered a civic reception to-night, in the Garrison Hall. Speeches of welcome were delivered by the Mayor (Mr Lyemar), Mr John Townley, and the Anglican clergy, Father Lane representing the Roman Catholics, and the Rev. Grant representing Nonconformist Ministers, and an address on behalf of the Maori membere of the diocese. Bishop Averell, in his reply, touched upon the necessity for great souled men. to fill public positions. He supported the military defence system, and strongly inveighed against the betting evil.
