A. AND P. SHOWS.

PAHIATUA-AKITIO SHOW. REMARKABLE SUCCESS .OF FIRST VENTURE. (By Our Special Reporter.^ Like all tho other 1910 fixtures' the new Association at Pahiatua was very lucky in the matter of weather conditions. As at- Woodville heavy threatening clouds and iuuggy weather were the order of the day, but by noon a clear sky hot sim greeted the gathering. Pahiatua more than vindicated its right to hold a show by the splendid respond £>$ both town and country. Even the comiilUteo's Sanguine anticipations of a large attefi-* dance were exceeded. From an early hour the farmers' conveyances began to arrive, and they poured, in from nil quarters of the landscape in continuous streams, while tho "cabbies," who travelled between the town and the course, had a record day. It is estimated that between fifteen and eighteen hundred people were present, and these were ahncst wholly drawn from the Pahiatua and Akitio district, very few coining by either north or south trains. The result of this splendid attendance was ,not oniy I an animated gathering, but a substantial linancial lift to the new Association, | which has cleared over £100 on its first venture. This first effort of Pahiatua practically resolved itself into an exhibition of horseflesh, which, of course, from the standpoint of .the general public, was not unwelcome, for that considerable portion of it which is drawn from tho towns know more about a horse than any other animal. Besides a horse can jump, and do various other things more or less entertaining, and yesterday's gathering consequently abounded in interesting features. The saddling paddock was a. sight well worth seeing, its aggregate of horseflesh being quite amazing. There were 346 entries, and while some of the exhibits were hardly up to metropolitan standard the show as a whole was a

realiy remarkable revelation of the district's ability to produce F good horses. As usual the jumping was the great at- ! traction. A line array *of performers lined up before the judges. Better names than Corroboree, Lord Ullin, Hikorangi, and the evergreen Pickpocket are not to be found even in the Martawatu programmes. and expectation ran high in the big steeplechase. Mr MeNiven's flier was in perfect form, in spite of an ugly cut on his near fore fetlock. As usual he started tail first, but soon had the business end of him to the furniture. Then a delighted public saw that furniture treated as only Pickpocket can treat it —with the utmost contempt. He was not asked to jump a second time. Nor was Mr J. McTavish's more staid performer, the grey Lord Ullin, who made a faultless circuit, and was only beaten because he mot a flying machine. A tie for third place resulted rather disastrously for Mr Stan Whyte, the rider of Capt. J. B. Whyte's stylish chestnut mare. Lady On a. Already one of the riders had rather ungracefully fallen over hie mount's head, as the result of a false .step on uneven ground, and just as Lady Ona was about to to the first brush ehe stumbled, crashed right through the obstacle, and fell, throwing her rider heavily on his back. Mr Whyte was rendered unconscious for nearly half an hour, but apart from that receive d no injuries. In the Maiden Hunters 1 , Mr J. feweeney, who has had a lot of hard luck with his team of cracks, scored a most popular win on Emblem, Lady Ona running him a close second, with Lord Ullin third. The ladies had to negotiate the same obstructions on the same mounts as the men, and gave a fine and very popular exhibition. Miss Bolton, who is stili in her teens, guided cleverK her father's grey Scotch Mist to victory amid applause. Miss W areham .getting into second place on Mr G. Buchanan s Review. Mr W. H. J Sooth's beautiful black giant Hikorangi, of whom so much was expected, jumped faultlessly under the : clever Miss Stewart till he came to the double. He then proved too strong in the head for his fair mount and ijpoilt his chance by swerving. The pony events added considerable variety, and somo cxcifement. Air J. H. Milne's black mare Darkie, who ran away from everything at _ Woodville, scored a double win in the jumping and pony race. There was a little diversion at the close of the race. One of the fleetest entrants had been excluded because he was alleged to be over 14.2 hands, but after the race a careful measurement revealed the fact that he was under the standard, and the wrathful owner made things merry for a while. The remainder of the horse classes were a source of attraction "to the public, and competition was very keen. Mr W. J. Sedcole's Caioola, a chestnut gelding, which had the rather tantalising luck of securing five' seconds at Woodville, improved matters by getting a couple of firsts, while Mr E. Ryan's Flirt and Mr W. H. Booth's Brown Stout also scored, a double. Following is the remainder of the prize list: — CATTLE.

Mr 8. 11. Lancaster judged the cattle classcs. There was good competition in the Jerseys. J. B. Nelson's Oculist 11., the Woodvillo champion, was again successful in winning the lirst prize in bull anv age, from eight other competitors. W." H,. Booth's Oculist V. was second. The judge considered the class a fair one. Only two' entries were received in the yearling bull class and Mr Lancaster did not consider them good specimens. Mr A. Buchanan's Silver Conqueror was first and Mr W. H. Booth's Saxony second. Mr W. H. Booth's Primrose V., an old prize winner, was again awarded first for cow any age, Mr A. Buchanan's Enid being second and his Starlight Lily third. Tho heifer class was the strongest of the Jerseys, both numerically and for quality. Mr Buchanan was again successful with Forest Queen. W. H. Booth getting second and third with two nice animals. Mr Lancaster was disappointed with the general run of tho dairy cattle. With the exception of tho class for two dairy heiforn between 20 and 35 months, which tho judge considered as good as he had seen anywhere. A. Eddie was awarded both first and second with four splendid animals. W. H. Booth's entry secured t.he ".ward in two yearling heifers, with E. Daley's second. J. G. Brechin was awarded first for two heifer calves. W. 11. Booth';? was first and P. J. Quirk's second in dairy heifer in milk under three years, and J. C. Brechin's scoured first and P. J. HOROWHENUA. FOURTH ANNUAL SHOW. ;By Our Special Reporter.) There was a very largo attendance at the Horowhenua Show yesterday, estimates placing it at well above 2000 people. many of whom had travelled considerable * distances to be present at the fixture. Included among the prominent, visitors were the Hon. D. Buddo and Mr Field, M.P.., the latter being accompanied by Mrs Field. The weather was delightful, though rather too warm. Considerable interest was evinced in the display of stock and the competitions, which were all keenly contested. The grand parade was a feature of the proceedings and showed up very prominently the excellent entry of horses, considerably over one hundred, taking part in the march past. THE OPENING CEREMONY. The show was formally opened after lunch, by the lion. D. Buddo, Minister for Internal Affaire, previous to which the President, Mr J. Kebbell, stated he had received an apology from the Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister for Lands, who regretted his unavoidable absence. Mr \V. H. Field, M.P. for the district, and Patron of the Association, said they might fairly congratulate themselves on the result of the show, especially when they remembered that when started three years ago entries only totalled 200, in 1903 they went up to 320, 400 last year, while for the present show they had gone up to 550. This result was greatiy due to the excellent management of the committee and the valuable work of the secretary, Mr 13. Gardner. Referring to the Hon. Buddo. Mr Field expressed the opinion that it was most satisfactory that they should have a Minister who was a practical farmer, and as such he would be abie to see what the wants of the district were. Mr Field referred at length to the fertility of the district and its climate, and expressed the opinion

that it had a great future before it as a fruit-producing centre. The Hon. D. Buddo said' that he had now been present at two out of their three shows and he very gladly agreed that the district, deserved" all that had been said of it, and there was'no doubt that it was going to develop at a much greater rate than at present, more, perhaps, than any of them dreamt of. He congratulated the Association -on its excellent display of stock, especially the dairy stock, which indicated that, the farmers were drawing a very respectable share of the returns from this important and valuable industry. He quoted statistics showing the great increase in the export of dairying produce during the past year, and said that for the present financial year the Dominion's whole exports closely 'approached £20,000,000. Reference was also made to the increased unimproved value of the Horowhenua County, the figures being as follows: — 1900. '£678.049; 1909, £2,111,530; an increase of £1,423.483. He paid a. valuable tribute to the executive of the show as a feeder and educational foster in connection with the big show at Palmcrston, and expressed the opinion that it was shows of the nature of the present one that enabled farmers and graziers to form a correct estimate of the quality of the stock required for the metropolitan fixtures. In conclusion, the hon. gentleman again congratulated the Association on its very successful and interesting display. Appended are concluding prize details:—
