EFFECT on STOCK SALES. rkprksentatioks- to the MINISTER. The council of the Chamber of Commerce held a. meeting in the Mayors room last night in connection with-the new railway time-table. There were present:—Mr 11. Haydon, President of the Chamber, in the chair, and Messrs J. M. Johnston. G. W. Harden, T. R- Hodder, L. Collinson, 11. F. Gibbons and Capt. Prcccc, members of the council: the Mayor and Crs. Palmer and Clausen, representing the Borough Council, Messrs Holmes, Porritt and P. bmi, representing the stock auctioneers, ' mc Mr M. A. Eliott. representing the Wool and Skin Buyers' Association. Air Holmes apologised tor trie unavoidable absence of Mr R. S. Abraham, who would be in attendance later, lie said the auctioneers had found the new borvie was most inconvenient inasmuch as it "prevented the Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay buyers from arriving in time for the weekly swek sales. The havers from the whole ot the top end ot the Wairarapa. from' Kketahuna down, to Ma=terton. onlv got here at one o cloclc, while the saio-i began at 11.30 and they would not come here to spend the night and return next day. liny also wanted the morning tram irom Waipukurau rei list a ted. The old trains from Masteiton aifd Waipukurau suited them in every

respect. , Mr Collinson said the trains which arrived in about eleven in the morning worked well for the retailers and suited them admirably. M'- J. M. Johnston referred to the conference that had been held and the deputation that had waited on the .Minister for Railways. Lower Wairarapa wanted a connection with Palmersion and this was conceded, but instead of the train starting ironi Featherston it' started from' Cross Crock, and got here too* late to be of any use. Mr Johnston said a train arrived in Palmer.'ton from Dannevirke at 9.15 a.m., which was not wanted. Another train left W aipukurau at 6.30. arrived at Woodville at 10.25 and stoppod there. That tiaun should come on to Palmerstoij. and reach here about 11.15. Then they wanted a train front Masterton to join the Waipukurau train at Wcodville. Such an arrangement, wonid also suit Iho Feikling sheep sales. The. chairman said the suggestions of the Napier Chamber of Commerce was that the Waipukurau train should not stop at Woodville. but should continue on io Palmerston.

Tho Mayor spoke of the inconvenience caused bv ilie new service. lie said the Minister "hail .-fa ted that further alteration* would published in March. He knew the Minister was going to Australia for a month or six weeks so that they must make representations •quickly. " It was no use writing letters on the subject. They must send a -deputation to YVeiliugron lo sim.' the Minister. It was quite useless merely meeting him at the railway station. He strongly urged that a deputation be sent to Wellington. The chajrman said ihe Minister intended to visit Feilding shortly and it might be more convenient to wait on him there. Mr R. S. Abraham, who arrived at this stage, said that before the alterations in the train service i hoy had been fairly well served. They ha-d had a considerable attendance of buyers from the other side of the ranges at local markets. Since the alterations, however, ihere had not: been the .same demand. 1 hough, there was more inducement for buyers to attend, owing to tin; higher prices <m that fide. The alteration had affcc-iod the attendance of sleek buyers and had a bad offeot on business. Mr Abraham moved, and Mr Palmer seconded: —That it be requested that Ihe train which leaves Waipukurau at 6.30 a.m. and arrives at- Woodville at 10.25 a.m. be run vhrcugh to Palmerston. and that a train bo run from Masterton to connect with this train at Woodviile. The motion was carried. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded ' by Captain Preece. it was docidcd to invite-three dele-rates each from the Borough Council, Kairr.nga.-County Council. Auctioneers' Association. Wool and Skin Buyers' Association. Holiday Association, with representatives of the Chamber, to form the deputation to the Minister. The Mayor. President of the Chamber. . and Mr R. S. Abraham were appointed a sub-committee to make n rrangement.s for the deputation. The secretary was instructed to write to the Minister and enquire whether it would be convenient for him to meet them at. Feilding or at Wellington.
