MAULED BY A SHARK.

NEWCASTLE, Jan. 26. About 11 o'clock this morning a 15-year-old boy named Albert Victor Clulow was swimming near the ballast jetty at Carrington Dylce, when he was attacked by a large shark, which bit off his right leg at the thigh and nearly severed the fingers of his left hand. It appears that young Cliilow and a companion named Simpson were bathing together. The latter had just left the water when Clulow dived in. The boy, when he came to the surface, was in the midst of an area of blood-etained water, and in evident distress. He called out for help and struggled to the wharf, where he was pulled ashore by two young men named George arid William Smith. As quickly as possible he was taken to the Newcastle hospital. Despite his terrible injuries and the vast flow of blood from the leg, he retained consciousness during the journey to a*nd after his arrival at the institution, pleading, while hasty preparations were being made for his treatment, that something should be done to put him out of his misery. The doctors who afterwards performed an operation expressed surprise at the vitality of the boy after the shock and the loss of blood he had suffered. The boy was operated on at midday by Drs Oxenham and Dunlop, but they were unable to complete the operation owing to their patient's weak condition. He did not awaken from the effects of the anaesthetic until late in the afternoon, and then after a short period of consciousness he died at 5 o'clock. The examination at the hospital disclosed the fact that not only was the sufferer's left I leg completely severed fnpm the body, but the right leg was badly bitten.
