A CONFIDENCE MAN.
AND THE SEQUEL,
A story of a "confidence trick" was related by Chief Detective Broberg in the Wellington Magistrate's Court yes- i terday concerning a young man named Phil Brady, alias G. M. M'Dpnald, who appeared before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., on a charge of obtaining from a local jeweller the sum of £2 by means of a certain falee pretence with intent to defraud. According to the prosecution, accused, on February 1, called at informant's shop and represented himself to be Brady, a wellknown Auckland horseman. In the course of conversation ho said that he had had a big win over his mount, Salute, and it was his intention to mark hie success by presenting his wife with a bracelet with the word "Salute" engraved upon it. He selected a bracelet, and then departed for a while, explaining that he had some track work to do at theVHutt. About 4 o'clock the same afternoon he returned. He expressed sorrow that he could not then pay for his purchase, as the banks were closed. This was unfortunate, so the story runs, as he was proceeding to Christchurch that night in connection with the races there. Believing him, the jeweller advanced £2. Then his "grateful" customer went away, with the promise that he would let him know of any "good things" running at Christchurch. "Accused," concluded Mr Broberg, "is an old offender." He then read over a list of numerous offences committed in various parts of New Zealand, the majority of which were for 1 obtaining money by misrepresentation. Accused, who pleaded guilty, aeked for leniency. He said that it was over two years since he had been last before the Court. He had gone to informant because he (accused) had a wife and two children dependent upon him. He had work to go to, and he would repay the £2. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed.
