. <n. A meeting of supporters oi' the Opposition party Avas held at Hastings, and was well attended. Sir Wm. Russell presided. Mr R. R. Martin, political organiser for the Reform party, gave a short address on the political situation, after which the selection of a candidate to contest the Hawke's Bay seat in the party's interest was discussed. It is understood that Messrs R. D. D. M'Lean and Mason Chambers declined nomination, and that the meeting ultimately resolved to nominate Messrs A. H. Russell. Hugh Campbell (Poukawa), and E. J. AVatt. Similar meetings will bo held in various centres, and a general ballot will subsequently be taken to fix the candidate who is to receive the combined support of the Opposition at the next elections. Messrs C E. Johnston and J. D. Rivera are reported to have been appointed secretaries to the Hastings Committee.
