CAMPBELL STREET SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The Campbell Street School Committee met last night. There were present Messrs H. Palmer (chairman), Clausen, Pickering, Thacker, Gittings, and Swallow (lion. sec.). The headmaster's report showed the roll to be 654, average attendance 559, highest attendance 568. Five pupils qualified for the junior scholarship, and one, Jack Barnard, got a junior national scholarship. Reference was made to the poor attendance of pupils at the re-opening of the school, Mr Watson stating: "There was criminal carelessness shown by parents in the matter of sending their children to school after the holidays. The highest attendance for last week was 34 below the average attendance for the whole of last year. If the holidays lasted three months there would still be parents who would fail to send their children back in time." Correspondence was received from the Education Board stating that owing to' the attendance at the school, over 612, two additional teachers would be appointed. In this connection exception was taken by members of the committee to the great number of temporary appointments to the school teaching staff, which it was stated destroyed the organisation of the school. It was pointed out that in October last the Board was aware that additional teachers would be required at the school, hut no steps were taken to provide them till January, and they would not be available till March or April. THere were at. present three temporary teachers at the school. Accounts to the.amount of £16 4s 6d were passed for payment. Messrs Pickering and Gittings were appomtI ed visiting committee for the month.
