THE COAL STRIKE.

MINERS DISCUSS THE POSITION

Tho Amalgamated Council after a protracted discussion dealt with two resolutions, the first being moved by Mr Dunleavy and seconded by Mr Waugh (southern miners' representative), and was in favour of the Northern miners resuming work on the 14th inst. This was lost by tHreo to two, both the Northern and Western representatives voting against the motion. The second resolution, moved by Mr Peters and seconded by Mr Allison (Northern miners' representative), was that the Northern district be asked to ballot upon the acceptance of the Wages Board, or an open conference simultaneous with the resumption, the result to be known not later than Saturday night next, and in the event of the Wages Board being adopted the resumption of work to take place both in the Northern and Southern district as soon as possible. This was carried by three to two, the Northern and Western representatives supporting and the Southern opposing the motion.

The action of the Western delegates, in voting against the Southern proposal for the resumption of work came as a surprise, it being generally anticipated that they intended to support the motion.

Horses have been brought in from the paddock in readiness for resumption of work in the various mines.

The Newcastle Miners' Delegate Board meeting to-morrow is expected to arrive at a decision which will have an important bearing on the settlement of the strike.
