STOCK SALES

Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report as follows: —*At Levin on Friday we had very heavy yardings of both sheep and cattle, every pen in the yards being full. We sold every pen of sheep under the hammer bar one line of wethers, and prioes were in favour of vendors. Cattle also sold well, and wo made an almost total clearance. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report holding their usual fortnightly sale in Millers' road yards, Dannevirke, on Friday. The firm offered a moderate yarding of sheep and a full yarding of cattle to a better attendance than usual. All things considered sheep sold well, as did cattle, but the latter market lacked the buoyancy evidenced at late sale, and although good business was done it was hard work. We quote-. —Fat owes, 9s 8d to 10s 6d; sma.ll 2tooth ewes, to lis 4d; scrags, 4s to ss; cull lambs, to 5s sd. Cattle. —Fat cows, £3 lis to £4 12s; 3yr steers, to £4 6s; 18 to 20-months steers, £2 19s 6d; 3yr empty heifers, to £3 7s; empty 20 to 24-months heifers, £2 13s; erppty cows, £2 10s to £2 17s; calves, 20s to 38s. GRAIN MARKET. (Per Peess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 4. The New Zealand wheat that was threshed before the late rains is in demand locally, as it is expectcd there will be very little more stook threshing done this season. Old wheat is also inquired for. There is an advance in price for sound _ new wheat, and up to 4s, less commission, has been paid for a line of 2000 bushels of Waikari-grown Tuscan. Other sales of new wheat have been made at 3s 3s lid, and 3s 11-gd at country stations. There are no oats offering, and there is no change to report in barley. Cocksfoot from the Peninsula is now offering more freely, and prices are rather weaker, a considerable amount having been purchased at 4d per lb, and much of this was 131b to 141b seed. The price at which dressed seed is being offered in the North Island has had an adverse influence on the market.

THE WOOL SALES. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report having received the following cable message from their London House, under date of the 4th inst.: —Wool. —'Wool sales closed very firm. As compared with last sales' closing ratc6 super merino wools are unchanged, and other descriptions of merinos are from par to 5 per cent higher; crossbred wools of fine quality are unchanged; for crossbred wools of medium and coarse quality and crossbred wools light in condition and bright, if they are suitable for America prices are unchanged, but otherwise crossbred wools of medium quality are 7£ per cent higher, and crossbred wools of coarse quality are 10 per ccnt higher. The total net quantity available amounted to 180,000 bales, including 1600 bales brought forward from previous series, of which quantity 12,000 bales were, sold to America, 80.000 bales for Home consumption, and- 83,000 bales to the Continent, leaving 5000 bales to be carried forward to March series. There were sold for the Home trade 80,000 bales, for the Continent 81.000 bales, for America 14,000 bales, and 500 bales were hold over. The average prices for greasy merinos fully maintained the December rates. Fine sorts advanced 5 per cent.; all scoureds advanced 5 per cent; finer crossbreds barely maintained December rates; coarser advanced from 5 to 10 per cent; top-making sorts showed the

greatest rise. Slipes advanced from sto 10 per cent; merino lambs advanced 5 per cent. To Pura top price llgd, average 102 d.

LONDON MARKETS, Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report having received the following cable messages from their London House, under date of the 3rd inst.:—Frozen Meat.— There is a .very good demand for all descriptions of .lamb. The market for 6aine is firmer, and seems likely to improve until increased arrivals come to hand. Mutton and beef are in better demand, with a firm market. Quotations are: — New Zealand prime ox beef, fores 2ad, hinds 3£d; New Zealand prime crossbred lamb, North Island heavy 4|d, light sgd; New Zealand prime crossbred mutton. North Island heavy 3|d, light 3ad. Canterbury lamb and mutton are not quoted. In the future quotations will be new season's. Tallow. —Low and inferior descriptions are 3d lower. Mutton is in poor demand and .other descriptions are unchanged. There is less demand for future shipment, prices for which are 3d lower.
