The Palmerston North Rifles lived th» first competition on Wednesday and Saturday last for the company's belt, and on both occasion* were favoured "with fine weather, but rather oil the warm .side. The Rifles will be represented at the Cheltenham meeting on Saturday next by a. team, mostly of the younger shots, who are anxious to try their luck. Shooting men will soon bo carrying a "trade mark" about with them, viz., "a skinned no«>." that being the result of the new apperture sight. It is a coitimon sight _to see men conic of! the mounds with the blood trickling down their faces, but that i.s a. mere trifle where matches are so keenly fought out in these days.
