The Palmerston North Rifles lived th» first competition on Wednesday and Saturday last for the company's belt, and on both occasion* were favoured "with fine weather, but rather oil the warm .side. Judging from the number competing and the keen interest .shown it is plain theye will be a big tussel for the •coveted honour this year. Although there has been bigger scores on former occasions. they have never been so closely bunched together as • this time, which ■shows very oven and consistent shooting. The competition will be, continued this week at the 500 and 600 yards range. The Rifles will be represented at the Cheltenham meeting on Saturday next by a. team, mostly of the younger shots, who are anxious to try their luck. Shooting men will soon bo carrying a "trade mark" about with them, viz., "a skinned no«>." that being the result of the new apperture sight. It is a coitimon sight _to see men conic of! the mounds with the blood trickling down their faces, but that i.s a. mere trifle where matches are so keenly fought out in these days.
