SPORTING.

J. McCombe, after seveial changes of plans, has decided to soz up as a trainer at Wingatui, Dunedin. "Whalebone" in the Auckland Star writes:—ln connection with the brawl that took place in the jockeys' room at the Fccton meeting, evidence has been taken by the local stewards, and the mattei- will shortly come before tho metropolitan body at Wanganui. Scenes such as those tend to lower the tone of racing, and it is anticipated that the Wanganai stovvards will hold an exhaustive inquiry into tho disturbance. It is understood, says a Southern writor, that the services of James Barden will be secured for Bobrikoff in Australian events. Barden has had a remark ililc career dining the past few years, and his success is attributed in a measure to his adherence to the rails. When siding Bobrikoff, Bar den will, no doubt, have to depart from his usual practice of hugging the rails, as the Now Zealand horse is a slow beginner, and a position on the rails would not always be useful. Mr F. W. Coombcs. who is well-known in Auckland, left for Wellington on Monday to take over the position of sporting editor of the N.Z. Times. The Mauser gelding Moloch has been sold to a patron of W. Davies' stable, and is now being trained at Trcntham. Ho will probably be schooled over nurdles shortly It is a long while since racing was carried on under such adverse circumstances as prevailed at Takapuna on Saturday last. Throughout the afternoon rain fell solidly, and it was a wet and bedraggled crowd that wended its' way home after the last race. Under the circum.-fcanccs the racing was exceptionally good, while speculation was considerably \bove expectatiens.

How easily a man's luck is turned was evidenced at Takapuna on Saturday last. J. Conquest was engaged to ride- Fuss in the Maiden Plate, but was late in arriving on the course, and the services of C. Brown were secured, and the mare duly accounted for the event. Brown was in good form during the afternoon, riding four winners ond two thirds, out of .dx mounts. GISBORNE RACES.
