MANAWATU OPEN DISASTROUSLY

Considerable interest is being evinced in the match between. Wanganui and the Manawatu Saturday rep. team that is being played on the oval at the Sportsground to-day. , The Manawatu team is considered to be a fairly sound one, and the majority of the players have shown consistent form during the season. They were represented by the team chosen by the selectors. The Wanganui team was rather a weak one and -was not the original team chosen to represent tho town._ McLean (Feilding) was elected captain of the home team and winning the tosa decided to bat, going to the wickets himself accompanied by Roberts. Messrs Holland (Wanganui) and 0. H. Clcland (Manawatu) are officiating as umpires. Holland opened the bowling for Wanganui from the western end of the ground, McLean facing him and scoring a single off the fourth ball of the over, Roberts playing out the rest of the over. Henderson opened from the eastern end, and clean bowled McLean with his first ball—l for 1. Goldspring was next man in and soon opened his scoring account with a single. He got another off Holland's second ball, but was splendidly caught off the second ball of the next over by Trevena, who was fielding sullstitute for Wanganui.— 2 for 3. Henderson's average was now reading two wickets for one run. Mitchell filled the gap and opened his account with a single. Roberts was caught out next ball by Luxford.—3 for 7. Reischer followed. He scored a single off the fifth ball of the over and two byes brought 10 up. Both players were now playing carefully;" the bowling being too good to take any liberties with. Trevena had a short life, being clean bowled in Holland's next over.—s for 20. _ Ongley was next and scored a single off his second ball. Ongley made the first boundary hit of the match, scoring a nice 4 off Henderson, scoring 2 next ball, and being caught out soon after by H. B. Cave.—7 for 32. Ongley 7. Luxford wont on to bowl next over, Bartholomew scoring a lucky_ 2 off his first ball. Martin, next man m, opened carefully, making a eingle before he was bowled by Luxford.—B for 39. Bartholomew brought 43 up, scoring 4 off Bunett's first ball, making his total 14. Bartlett, the new man in, opened his account with a 3 off the same bowler. Bartholomew was given out l.b.w. shortly afterwards.—9 for 48. The innings terminated shortly afterwards for 51, Bartlett being clean bowled by Luxford.

Wanganui commenced their innings at 12.55, A. N. Cave and Bunett facing Bartlett and Bartholomew, but Bunott was bowled in Bartlett's first over.—l for 0. . H. B. Cave was next man in, and scored the first run for his side, a single off Bartlett.
