EDUCATION ACT AMENDMENT BILL.

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN. August 2. A special meeting of the Otago Educational Institute was held yestcrdav to discuss the provisions of the Education Act Amendment Bill. The following resolutions were carried "That this meeting of teachers heartily congratulate tho Minister of Education on the production of a Bill which provides, for a more liberal scale of staffing and salaries, and that tho attention of the Minister bo called to the inadequate staffing proposed to bo allotted to schools in grade 6a. Inadequacy of staffing was shown bv the fact that- in schools of from 81 to 129 there was provision for two assistants, while, in schools of from 121 to 160 (grade 6a) two assistants only were provided for; that the Minister be asked to classify separately positions held by male and female; that the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute be recommended to urge the Minister to modify clause 7, section 7, so as to secure from reduction the salary of any teacher whose school is reduced in grade until such teacher has had the opportunity of applying arid receiving transfer to a higher or equivalent position; that the Minister be asked to make provision so that teachers with twenty years' service whose salaries are less than ±i2OO a year and teachers with fifteen years' service whoso salaries are less than £160, shall receive the maximum salary of their grade from Ist January, 1909."
