POLITICAL.

THE PALMERSTON SEAT. We have been informed on the best of authority that several prominent suppdrters of the Opposition Party have approached Mr D. Buick, of Cloverlea, liairanga, with a view to inducing him to contest the Palmerston seat at the forthcoming general election.

This morning a representative of this journal called on Mr Buick and asked if he intended to stand. Mr Buick stated that though he had not definitely decided to come forward, it was to all intents and purposes a foregone conclusion that he would do so. He had been approached by people from all parts of the electorate who were desirous of seeing a good Opposition candidate in the field. He wished, however, to emphasize the fact that there should be no half measures. If he came forward he was prepared to go into it heart and soul, but before definitely announcing himself he wanted to be assured that his supporters were ready to form themselves into a good strong committee and work in such a manner as to leave nothing undone that would in any way contribute to his success. If they were prepared to do this, he was quite p2-epared to stand, and had placed himself in their hands with that understanding. Mr Buick has had considerable experience in matters political; lie is ono of the best known and most highly esteemed settlers in the district, and it would be a difficult matter to find anyone more suitable to fill the position of Opposition eandiate. It is the intention of the supporters of the party to hold a meeting on Monday evening next, when the matter will bo fully discussed, and an invitation forwarded to Mr Massey, Leader oi' tho Opposition, to deliver an address at a suitable date..
