Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, August 3. C'has. E. Bird, for many years a .steward of the Fernhill Chili, and well known in racing circles, died this morning. INVERCARGILL, August 3. Mr Cruickshnnks. S.M.. dismissed a charge of permitting' drunkenness against. John Afllcck, licensee of the Wallacetown Hotel. The landlord of the premises had called regarding repairs, and had five drinks, collapsing suddenly after tlio last. The Magistrate held there must be knowledge, connivance or carelessness on the part of the seller. If a customer became drunk but was not allowed to remain, the licensee did not permit drunkenness. Mr Powell, the landlord, was an old hotelkceper, and was known to be a man who could cavrv liquor well. CIIRIS TCIIU RCTT, August 3. The New Zealand Shipping Company's Tongariro sailed at 1 p.m. from Capetown for Wellington on August, 1. NELSON. August 3.
