AUSTRALIAN NAVAL DEFENCE.
The Federal Prime Minister recently paid an official visit to the A.N.A. display of local manufacturers at the exhibition, and advantage was taken of the opportunity thus presented by a deputation to wait upon Mr Deakin for the purpose of bringing under the notice of the Government a suggestion by the South Australian A.N.A. that a ship for training Australian seamen for the navy be m&cle available. Mr Deakin said the matter had not escaped the notice of the Federal Government, which had already asked the Imperial authorities that the two third-class cruisers at present on the station should remain here when their commission had expired, for the purpose of training seamen. He was aware that a number of ships were being " scrapped " each year, and he thought that some of these vessels might possibly be made use of for training.
