DEATH OF THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE.

The Duke of Devonshire was 74. and for many years has been prominent in British politics. He was one of a special mission to Russia in 1856, but in 1857 entered the House of Commons for North Lancashire. When Parliament opened in 1859 he moved the vote of no-confidence which overthrew Lord Derby's Ministry. Since then he has held Ministerial office on several occasions. refusing the Premiership twice. As Lord Hartington, he led the Liberal Partv upon Mr Gladstone's retirement in 1874. He separated from the Party over Home Rule, and till 1903 led the Unionist Party in the Lords. The Duke was a strong opponent of Mr Chamberlain's tariff reform views, and as a protest against them he resigned from the Unionist Frec.trade Club. He owned 136,000 acres of land.
