THE POSTAL DEPARTMENT.

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 2. The Hon. J. A. Millar, speaking at ' a letter carriers' social on Saturday ' night, said the Postal Department , was at one time the envy of every de- j partnient because it had its classifica- i tion scheme. Since that time other departments had been classified until ; as. far as he could gather from opin- ; ions expressed, he fudged that the time had nearly arrived when there should be a further classification of Postal Department.—(Applause.) In some of the classes the classification was perfectly fair, but in others an improvement might be effected. He referred to the more poorly paid J classes of the service. Those classes ; ought to receive particular attention ; at first instance. He did not believe \ in poorly paid workers. When a man ' occupied a responsible position he j ought of course to be paid well for his » services. Increased responsibility j should carry with it increased emolu- j ment, but when a man had made his j way into a position in which it might ' be said he was comfortable, and there ; were others who were pinched, the i ones in the lower grades ought to be j considered before those in the higher } grades, and in that respect he thought | that there was room for improvement, j The Postmaster-General, he believed, j had the welfare of every man in the service at heart, and if he was satis- 5 fied that the pay was not sufficient, he , would be the first man to come to the | House and ask that it should be in- | creased.—(Applause.) j
