At tlie recent Whangarei meeting all the investors in the Marsden Stakes were on the winner, Bonomiana, consequently they only received 9s for every 10s invested. Amongst those who backed Bonomiana was an old Maori dame who, receiving the 9s, said to the pay-out clerk, " By gorry I give you ten shillin', what for only get nine back?" " Oh," said the clerk, "the other shilling we keep to buy oil for the totalisator." "Oh, I see! All right!" said the old dame and she walked away perfectly satisiied with the explanation. W. Young, the well-known horseman, who appealed to the Wanganui J.C. against his disqualification for alleged boring in a hack hurdle race run at the recent llangitikei R.C. meeting received no sympathy from the parent body which endorsed the six months' "stand down" sentence inflicted by the rural club.
