Borough Elections.

(To the Editor)

Sir,—l notice in to-night's Standard a paragraph stating that Dr. Rockstrow will be a candidate at the Borough elections, and that he would '' contest the election on independent lines." I shall ' not at present enter into the. question of the doctor's qualifications for the position, but would ask what is meant by "contestingthe'election on independent lines." If Dr. Kockstrow (or anyone else) intends to stand for the position, he certainly will require to face the electors and give them an opportunity of knowing his views upon important questions affecting the Borough. Any candidate who is not prepared to do this will find himself a long way out of it on election day. We ratepayers have had far too much, during the last two years, of Councillors who went in on " independent lines," and we are determined that at this election one will know the "lines" upon which candidates will act if elected Councillors. And this, in my opinion, is where the Citizens' Committee will do good work; they will see that at the coming elections every candidate whom they recommend to the electors will give their views before a public meeting, and will be prepared to answer questions relating thereto. And this is what should be done at all Borough elections. Thanking you, sir,—l am, etc.,

A Ratepayer,

[The paragraph in the Standard did not 'state definitely that Dr. Bockstrow would be a candidate, but said it was rumoured he would contest the election.; If our correspondent does enter into the question of the doctor's qualifications for a seat in the Council, he ■will" find them sufficiently high to enable him to fill the position with credit to himself and the Borough.— Ed. M.E.S.I ■ ♦
