CRUELTY TO DUMB ANIMALS.

Sojie facts have been brought under our notice which serve to emphasise the need of active measures being taken to prevent cruelty to dumb animals, cases of which are alleged to be of frequent occurrence. A few years ago Palmerston North possessed a Society established for this purpose, and it did useful work, but lack of interest by the public disheartened its members who, after a time, ceased their1 labours. The Society, we understand, is not extinct, and we hope steps will be taken to resuscitate it so that a systematic effort can be. made to cope with the cruelty cases which are of frequent occurrence in our midst. Mr J. H. Hankins, who took a leading part in the affairs of the Society, has expressed his intention of convening a meeting to establish it on a sound footing, and we trust he will be successful in the undertaking. If the town possessed a live Society and an energetic officer there would be a reasonable prospect of punishing some of the culprits, while other persons equally.as callous would find it profitable to mend their ways if they wished to avoid having their acts of cruelty exposed in the Magistrate's Court.
