AUCKLAND, This day. Obituary—Monsignor Paul, of One hunga, aged 82.
Alfred Stringfellow, who formerly kept a boardinghouse in Durham-street, Auckland, was arrested in Wellington on Wednesday night on a charge of stealing £230 from Matthew Gear. Gear and Stringfellow worked on the gumfields in the north. Gear came to town and drew out of the bank £230 which he alleged Stringfellow had induced him to hand over, stating the money would be placed in the Bank of New Zealand here and could be drawn upon as required and he intended to spend a few days in Auckland and then go to Australia.

The Harbour Board receipts for the past month (ships dues and wharfage) constitute a record tor the port, amounting to £3233. . This eclipses the previous record by £700.
DUNEDIN, Thi H day,
In the case in- which ex-Constable Osborne was charged with the theft of envelopes, etc., to the value of 3s 9d, the Crown Prosecutor asked that the matter be dealt with as an indictable offence. Mr Solomon, for the defence, pointed out that he was only charged with common larceny. Mr Fraser, thereupon, decided not to offer any evidence, with a view to a fresh information being sworn, and Mr Graham, S.M., dismissed the case. Osborne was then brought up on a futther charge of breaking and enter ing the shop of Killroy, draper, and stealing handkerchiefs to the value of £1 6s 3d, and on this case a remand for a week was applied for by Mr Solomon and granted. It was intimated that other charges were pending.

The weather is close and muggy and heavy rain is threatening. The country is still very dry and a good soaking rain is greatly needed.
MASTERTON, This 'day,
In the Police Court this morning, before Mr-James, S.M., a youth named William Daniel Cross was charged, on three informations,- with stealing saddles and bridles from settlers at Homebush, near Masterton, between December last and March 22. The accused, who pleaded guilty, was severely admonished by the S.JI, who pointed out the disgrace he was bringing on himself and parents in continuing these petty thefts. The accused was ordered to come up for sentence when called on.
